Divorce
Even in the Bible Times, couples could get a divorce. This shows that the ancients knew that there would be occasions where a relationship just wouldn’t work out anymore. In today’s time divorce is even more accessible. This is particularly the case in Western cultures, where women are not necessarily culturally obligated to have a husband. They also have means to support themselves should a divorce happen. Yet, is a divorce the best alternative for a couple? What should be the factors that determine whether or not a divorce should take place? And if a couple does find they need to go through with it anyway, what are the steps they need to take to get the divorce proceeding started? This article will answer these questions.
First and foremost before going through with a divorce, a couple needs to see if there’s hope of saving the marriage. Common problems that result in divorce are usually in regards to: affairs, money and lack of intimacy in the bedroom. Some of these issues may be able resolved through family counseling. Other issues may require extreme changes in one’s life. For example, if a couple is facing financial crisis, perhaps bankruptcy could be the move that helps prevent the type of relationship downfall that results in divorce. It is not the best move for a person’s credit, but it at least clears them of their previous debt. This could result in a lot less stress for a couple.
If a marriage is still going downhill, a couple can consider going through a separation. With a separation the couple lives as if they were divorced, but are not actually so. Separations can be legal in which a court splits assets among the couple, or it could be informal. Since a legal separation can be just as taxing as a divorce, it is recommended couples try out an informal separation first. This way if they do decide to get back together, they won’t have to go through as much trying to join together financially.
After this if the marriage still looks like it is in need of a divorce, the couple needs to seek out a divorce attorney. They will really need two divorce attorneys, one for the wife and one for the husband. Either way, many divorce attorneys offer free consultations, so both sides can get a good idea of what to expect when they go through the final steps of their divorce. It is for this very reason a divorce attorney needs to be seen even if a couple does not have the money on hand to pay them. Many divorce attorneys can make payment arrangements. Otherwise, a couple can simply use the advice to better know how they can file divorce for themselves.
When the divorce is finalized, the couple will now live as separate entities. Any assets that were previously combined are split. Debt is also split among the parties as well. As far as custody, this will also be determined in the divorce proceedings. Usually, one parent will take the kids during the week, while the other parent will have them on the weekend. Either way, when the divorce does go through, both parties will have to make quite an adjustment in their lives. But for many it’s better going through this adjustment than continuing in a marriage that is miserable.
